First Jr./Am 1.20m Team Takes 5th at Championship Event in Sacramento

by WSHJA Member Services October 22, 2013 in Member Article, Shows

The team comprised of 4 horse/rider combinations included  Tia Carr & Showgirl, Danielle Bogardus & BB Orphan Andy, Courtney Youell & Juliander C, Cassie Thomas & Mason. Morgan Carr was the team’s chef d’equipe.

Placing 5th overall, the team put in a good competitive effort, representing WSHJA well. The 1.20m championship event ran over 3 days and featured an Individual Championship as well as a Team Championship. Two of the team’s members have these impressions to share.

Danielle Bogardus and BB Orphan Andy | The experience of competing on the Washington State Team was amazing. I started to look into the team at the Evergreen show this last August and from that point on everyone was welcoming and there was a feeling of excitement. This opportunity gave me a chance to show in California, which I have never had before. The caliber of horses and riders there is one unlike here. Just being able to watch riders like Hans and Susie Hutchinson is a learning experience in itself.

Working with Morgan Carr for the week prior and then at the show was also a very positive learning experience. He was so supportive and just by watching him; you could tell how passionate he was about this show as well. He was an excellent leader, getting everyone on the team where they needed to be on time and making everything fun even in a competitive environment where nerves can sneak in.

By competing on a team, it was a bonding experience too. For as long as I can remember I have always competed against Cassie, Tia, and Courtney, but now we had the opportunity to put our competitive relationship aside and work together. I built friendships with all of them that I am so thankful for. Whether just hanging in the aisle way or going out for a team dinner we were always together and always laughing. The team aspect also added an element of responsibility unlike most horse shows. Now when you walked into the ring, your score didn’t just affect you, it affected three other people. This added another layer of responsibility but it was a positive one. It brought out the best in us.

This trip to Sacramento gave me just a taste of what is out there and now I have more drive than ever to push myself to be able to compete at that level more often. I was so excited and thankful for the opportunity to represent Washington and this was an experience I will never forget. The team idea is a great one; it has built a sense of camaraderie and strengthened our horse community on a whole back home. While we were there we have had a few moms come and watch that didn’t have any kids there but wanted just to be part of the experience for example.

Thank you very much again and I hope in the future there may be more opportunities to represent Washington State and the WSHJA!

Tia Carr and Showgirl | This experience is one that every rider should strive for. I was unable to participate at Young Riders prior to aging out, so the new 1.20M Championship peaked my interest when I heard about it last year. As an amateur, there aren't very many finals for us to strive for. The 1.20M Championship gave me a goal to work towards and being able to participate on a team filled with such talented and dedicated juniors as Courtney Youell, Danielle Bogardus and Cassie Thomas was extremely rewarding. In a sport, that is primarily individual, riding on a team brings such camaraderie and support that isn't always attainable at shows. This team allowed four riders from four different stables to come together and form a cohesive unit showcasing what excellent show jumpers we have in Washington State. It was so fun to cheer everyone on and know when I walked in the ring they were there cheering me on too. I hope that WSHJA continues to send a 1.20M junior/amateur team in the future so that others can enjoy this unique experience. I appreciate all the support we received from our trainers, other riders, our families, friends, local businesses and WSHJA.
