WSHJA Benefit Tack Consignment Sale Is Back For 2013!

by WSHJA Member Services February 21, 2013 in Announcements, Shows

Whether you have owned a horse for 5 weeks or 5 years, you probably have several items of tack that you bought and just haven’t used. This is your opportunity to find those items a new home, free up some cash and buy tack you can use! Come and shop for great bargains as we build up the inventory. We are at the shows, so bring your horse over and try it on before you buy!

Bring your bridles, bits, girths, martingales, blankets, halters, leather goods, equipment, etc. to the show and drop them off (If you have a single item over 50 lbs, please check first via email.) We are excluding saddles and clothes for the sale this year. When you come to the show, be sure to stop by and check out the inventory. The WSHJA Tack Sale is “credit card only” for purchases.

The WSHJA Tack Sale booth will be staffed at all the WSHJA shows and you can drop off items to be sold and browse the items available. A consignment fee is paid to WSHJA based on how much you consign to be sold: if you consign over $500 in value, you pay 25% to WSHJA, if you consign $500 or less, you pay 35% to WSHJA. There is a one time admin fee of $50 to cover a share of the expenses: storage, transport, software, filing taxes, etc. You will receive a check for your items once all of them are sold or by 10/30/13, whichever is first. All unsold items will be donated to a charity unless you specify that you will pick the item up at October Classic (or by appt in Woodinville).

WSHJA Celebrates 60th Anniversary Awards With Lots Of Sparkle

by WSHJA Member Services February 2, 2013 in Awards

It was a festive and glittery evening for the recipients of WSHJA 2012 Annual Awards. The room filled with riders and their adoring fans (aka parents, grandparents, fellow barn mates, and longtime supporters of WSHJA) to celebrate not only this year’s award recipients but to remember many of the greats from a 60 year history.

There was a lot to celebrate. And many people to recognize. WSHJA presented 36 State Awards, 82 National Awards, 30 USHJA Zone 9 Awards. Plus WSHJA honored four President’s Cup Awards recipients, three Sportsmanship Award recipients and three USHJA Affiliate Equitation Awards for the WSHJA Good Seat & Hands Medal. That’s a lot of celebrating.

The whole evening was made possible through the generous contributions of our member volunteers. A huge thanks goes out to;

  • Our talented announcers Scott Trewin, Bo Masters and Trevor Peterson we made it through in record time. A full evening indeed, but with 129 awards to present what are you going to do. Our announcers kept it flowing, presenting each award with enthusiasm and good spirit throughout the night.
  • Karen Freywald and her well organized team of ribbon and prize presenters Kim Gilmore, Melody Gilmore, Amy Kosmos, Val Nelson, Stephanie Von Gortler, Diane Renihan.
  • Betsy Christianson, Gillian Baird, Peter Brandon and Grady Kerron for presenting all the perpetual trophies. Lauren Myers and Emily Hilton for handing out the USHJA Zone 9 trophies.
  • The whole stylish movie star worthy room is thanks to Lynn Trewin and her band of volunteers Laney Senyohl, Krista Taylor, Liza Taylor, Camille Brash, Kim Stuckens, Jennifer Sparks
  • Jessica Vania for the commemorative program that will surely be a keepsake for years to come. And to Gary Voth, Rory Wade-Easely, Bobbie Harder for the photo slideshows that reminded us all what great company we are in.
  • Pat Domine and all the donors and bidders who made the silent auction a success, raising $6200 in support of the WSHJA Scholarship Fund.
  • Nancy Lewis, Suzanne Hitz and Katie Seymour for handling 420 registrations with grace and efficiency.
  • The Katies for raising $1300 in the raffle. Katie Nubel of CWD for donating the bridle and reins.  Katie Sputh for her stellar ticket sales.

We also owe a great deal of thanks to the evening's sponsors. Clare Warren of Archway Equestrian for generously hosting the welcome bubbly. Dacels Jewelers for making it possible for WSHJA to give the beautifully engraved watches and pendants to our champions and reserve champions.

Our sincere apologies if we have forgotten to mention someone. The Annual Awards Banquet is only possible with the support of our members. We appreciate you all and hope you enjoyed the evening.

Long Distance Travel and Show Ground Health Techniques, Dr. Sarah Jane Owens, DVM, MRCVS

by WSHJA Horse Welfare December 21, 2012 in Education

Dr. Sarah Jane Owens founded Owens Equine in Issaquah WA in 2009. She brings a lifetime of sport

horse expertise to the area, as well as cutting edge diagnostics. She has hauled her own horses to

California many times, as well as shipped them between North and South America and Europe. She

was involved in pre-Olympic prep of team members for the USA for the Sydney Olympics, and for

Great Britain for the Athens Olympics. Dr. Owens has also cared for teams of up to 40 polo ponies who

played on up to three continents per year at high levels. While working in Wellington FL, the ‘Florida

Crud’ as well as South American diseases like screwworm and Piroplasmosis were a constant fear for

horses coming from all over the country to compete in polo, showjumping, and dressage. At FEI level

competitions, Dr. Owens has been involved in barn biosecurity and quarantine and pre-competition

health screening.

Many of us are about to join the big parade down to Thermal California or other sunny climes to give our riding aspirations solid footing for the winter.

Recently, very public disease outbreaks at large show gatherings have put travel health at the forefront

of our concerns. The combination of immune suppression due to stress and the physiological obstacles

faced by the respiratory system during travel make keeping horses healthy a particular challenge.

Dr. Owens contributed these slides (with valuable links including required biosecurity measures  for 2013 HITS Thermal Shows) to help raise membership awareness of challenges and best practices to maintain your horses' health when shipping to, and while at, competition show grounds.

Time To Get Your Silent Auction Donations In

by WSHJA Member Services December 3, 2012 in Announcements

It’s that time of year again! The rain is falling, the show season is over and points have been accumulated. That can mean only one thing; the WSHJA Annual Awards Banquet is right around the corner. And our request for silent auction donations goes out to you.

The Silent Auction is one of the principal fund raising events for the year. 100% of the proceeds go to the WSHJA Scholarship Fund--supporting our member riders and their horses represent Washington at out-of-state regional and national finals. It also supports educational scholarship opportunities to our volunteer community.

Please show your support by donating auction items. We are counting on each barn donating 3 auction items--perennial favorites are:

  • Gift baskets filled with useful horsey stuff
  • Unique custom made items such as groom boxes, jumps, mounting blocks...
  • Anything clothing for horse, hound, or human.
  • Professional Services such as photography, massage, braiding....
  • Experiences including weekend getaways, tee times, unique dinners, riding clinics,  and tickets to sporting or theater events.

We kindly ask that all donations be auction ready. Please include the procurement form with each donation.

Contact Patricia Domine, WSHJA's Auction Chair, at p_domine@hotmail.com or at 425-369-1134 with any questions and to confirm your donation.

WSHJA has always been blessed with a generous community. We thank you in advance for your contribution again this year.
